Number of senior citizens from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' population estimates. "Senior citizen" may be classified into various age groups, but here, "senior citizen" refers to those aged 65 years and above. There are 29,010,000 senior citizens as of October 1, 2009 which is 22.75 persons per 100 population.

In view of the changes in the number of senior citizens since 1947, it can be seen that the number of senior citizens is consistently increasing.

The number of senior citizens per 100 population is greatest in Shimane, with 28.97 per 100 population. Akita, Kochi, Yamaguchi and Yamagata follow. On the contrary, the number of senior citizens per 100 population is smallest in Okinawa, with 17.44 per 100 population. The number of senior citizens is also small in Aichi, Kanagawa, Saitama and Shiga. The number of senior citizens in Okinawa is relatively small because the number of children is great in Okinawa.

There are fewer senior citizens in urban areas such as the Tokyo metropolitan area, the Chukyo area and Kansai areas, and more in rural areas. This is believed to be due to young people in rural areas moving out to urban areas, leaving behind many senior citizens.

The correlative ranking shows that it is positively correlated with the number of people engaged in agriculture and the rate of forest land. It can be seen that there are many senior citizens in areas centered around agriculture and where there is much greenery.

On the other hand, interestingly, it is negatively correlated with the number of McDonald's restaurants. It seems that McDonald's strategically opens stores in areas where there are few senior citizens.

It is also positively correlated with the number of deaths from cancer : male, the number of deaths from cerebral infarcation : female, and the number of deaths from lung cancer. This shows that there are many cases of cancer and cerebral infarcation in areas where there are many senior citizens.
