Number of vacation homes from the House and Land Statistics Survey. The House and Land Statistics shows the number of second homes such as vacation homes as well. This ranking is on the number of vacation homes per 100 thousand population. The House and Land Statistics classifies as secondary homes "vacation homes" and "others," defined as follows:

Vacation homes: Homes used as summer, winter and health resorts, in which no one usually lives.
Others: Homes other than vacation homes, used as sleeping quarters, in which people sometimes sleep, for example, after overtime work, etc.

The national average number of vacation homes per 100 thousand population is 323.61. Nagano is ranked first, with 2007.53 vacation homes per 100 thousand population. This is 6 times the national average. Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Wakayama, Tochigi, Shiga and Chiba follow. The data shows that there are many vacation homes in areas richly endowed with nature, near Tokyo and Osaka.

The correlative ranking shows that it is highly correlated with the number of hotels, indicating that there are many vacation homes where there are many hotels. This is, in a way, only natural as both are associated with tourism.
