Total area by prefecture. It is common knowledge that Hokkaido is #1, but the ranking concerning other prefectures is not well known. The Geographical Survey Institute's data as of April 1, 2009 has been used. Interestingly, although the total sum of the areas of each prefecture is 364,546 sq. km, the total area of Japan is 377,945 sq. km, with a difference in 13,399 sq. km. This is an area similar to that of Fukushima or Nagano.

This difference is due to areas with undefined borders between prefectures. Although areas of municipalities with undefined borders are not included in the areas of each prefecture, they are included in the area of Japan, causing this difference. The greatest undefined area, as of the present, is the area covering across

Tsuruoka City in Yamagata
Oguni Town, Nishiokitama County in Yamagata
Murakami City in Niigata
Sekikawa Village, Iwafune County in Niigata

A total area of 3,522 sq. km is undefined. This area alone is the same area as Tottori.

The Geographical Survey Institute also publicizes the areas by prefecture by provisionally appropriating undefined areas to each municipality, which has been used in this ranking.

Following Hokkaido with the greatest area, are prefectures in the Tohoku area. The smallest is Kagawa. Although Osaka was known as the prefecture with the smallest area, its area increased due to landfill areas and surpassed the area of Kagawa.

Hokkaido is also #1 for the area per 10 thousand population, with 150 sq. km. Heavily populated urban areas are ranked low, with Tokyo at the lowest. The area per 10 thousand population in Tokyo is 1.7 sq. km, which is close to 90 times that of Hokkaido.
