Number of fitness clubs from the Town Pages (telephone directory). There are 4,913 fitness clubs in Japan, which is 3.85 per 100 thousand population. Nagano, ranked first, has 6.81 fitness clubs per 100 thousand population. Tottori, Miyazaki, Fukui and Shiga follow. Iwata has the least number of fitness clubs, with 2.09 per 100 thousand population.

The concentration is low in the northern part of the Tohoku area, the southern part of the Kanto area, the Kansai area and the western part of Kyushu. In urban areas, there are few junior high school students participating in extracurricular activities and sports are not that popular in the first place, resulting in the low concentration in the metropolitan area and Kansai.

Although there is no particularly high correlation with other rankings, there seems to be slight correlation with Average Life Expectancy: Female and Average Life Expectancy: Male. There seems to be some small correlation between the number of fitness clubs and average life expenctance.
