Rate of female smokers from the Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare every 3 years. "Smokers" in the Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions refer to persons who "smoke everyday or occasionally."

The national average rate of female smokers is 12.7%. The rate of smoking is highest in Hokkaido with 20.6%, followed by Tokyo, Aomori, Kanagawa and Saitama. Although the rate of male smokers was high in prefectures in northern Kanto to Tohoku and Hokkaido, urban areas around Tokyo and Osaka are ranked high with respect to the rate of female smokers.

The correlative ranking shows that it is negatively correlated with the rate of light motor vehicles which means that in areas where there are few light motor vehicles, the rate of smoking is high. Because the rate of ligh motor vehicles is low in urban areas and high in rural areas, the opposite applies with respect to the rate of smoking which is high in urban areas and low in rural areas.

Although food consumption was highly correlated with the rate of male smokers, there seems to be no connection between the rate of female smokers and food preference. On the other hand, from the positive correlation with the rates of 40 year old and 30 year old females living alone, it can be said that the rate of female smokers is greatly affected by lifestyle.
