Number of Chinese residents in Japan from the Ministry of Justice's statistics on foreign residents in Japan. According to the Ministry of Justice's statistics, of foreign residents in Japan, the Chinese are the most, with 656,000 living in Japan as of 2008.

In view of the trend from 1991 onwards, the number of Chinese residents in Japan has been increasing rapidly, and today, the number of Chinese residents in Japan exceeds that of South and North Korean residents.

The greatest number of Chinese residents in Japan per 100,000 population is 1,159 in Tokyo, which means that there is 1 Chinese resident in approximately every 100 persons. Gifu (830), Chiba (675), Aichi (642) and Fukui (629) follow.

This is believed to be because there are many Chinese who work in convenience stores and restaurants in Tokyo and other areas around Tokyo such as Chiba. Many Chinese are believed to be working as factory workers in Gifu, Fukui and Aichi in which there are many manufacturing industries. Although there are Chinatowns in Kobe, Yokohama and Nagasaki, they do not seem to be of much significance on a national level.

Unlike foreign residents such as South Koreans and North Koreans who have lived in Japan from before the war, Chinese residents who have been increasing steadily from around 1975 seem to gather mainly around urban areas where they can find jobs in the service industry or rural areas where they can find jobs in factories.
