Of the number of deaths due to cancer in Japan, the total number of male and female deaths due to lung cancer is the greatest. In 2006, 45,896 men died of lung cancer. The distribution map shows that the number of deaths is low in the central part of Honshu and high in other areas.

One cause of lung cancer in smoking. The top five prefectures with respect to the rate of smoking are:
1. Aomori
2. Ishikawa
3. Yamanashi
4. Osaka
5. Tochigi
Of the above prefectures, the number of deaths due to lung cancer is great in some and small in others.

The five prefectures with the lowest rates of smoking are:
1. Hiroshima
2. Shimane
3. Okinawa
4. Yamaguchi
5. Miyazaki
In view of these prefectures as well, there seems to be no strong connection between the rate of smoking and the number of deaths due to lung cancer.
